Stephen A. Smith defends Michael Jordan after Daytona 500 celebration sparks controversy

Michael Jordan found himself at the center of online debate following 23XI Racing’s victory at the Daytona 500. While celebrating driver Tyler Reddick’s win, a viral clip circulated on social media that led some viewers to question Jordan’s interaction with Reddick’s young son during the on-stage festivities.

The backlash gained traction quickly, but not everyone agreed with the narrative forming online. Sports analyst Stephen A. Smith addressed the controversy on his show, strongly defending Jordan and urging the public to avoid rushing to conclusions.

“You should be very hesitant to impute the integrity of certain people who are as accomplished as much as MJ,” Smith said.

He continued, emphasizing Jordan’s long-standing relationship with Reddick and his family:

“It’s a kid Michael Jordan loves like it’s his own kid. It’s a kid he’s known for years.”

Smith also pointed to the celebratory context of the moment. “Today is his 63rd birthday. Just won the Daytona 500. Playing around with a kid while his father was standing right there, and that’s the kind of conclusion we jump to? I saw the video. It’s a non-story in my opinion.”

Reddick himself later addressed the situation, stating that from his perspective, there was nothing inappropriate about the interaction. He noted that he has come to know Jordan and his family well during his time with 23XI Racing and did not share the concerns circulating online.
