Overwatch China says players ‘cherish’ Anran’s current look amid Blizzard update plans
NetEase-run Overwatch China says players value Anran’s current design as Blizzard considers changes

NetEase-run Overwatch China has responded to Blizzard’s plans to modify the appearance of hero Anran, stating that players in the region “recognize and cherish” her current image.
Anran, one of five new Overwatch heroes, was first introduced in an animated trailer for her brother, support hero Wuyang. When she later appeared as a playable character, some fans noted differences between her cinematic and in-game designs.
Her English voice actor, Twitch streamer Fareeha Andersen, was among those calling for changes, arguing that the original portrayal suggested a move away from what she views as harmful beauty standards.
Andersen referenced trends such as “Ozempic chic” and what she described as ultra-thin, sharply contoured facial features dominating modern media. Amid the debate, Overwatch’s game director announced plans to adjust Anran’s appearance, prompting further discussion online.
In a post on Weibo, the NetEase-run Overwatch China account addressed the situation. “We have always felt proud of the addition of another Chinese hero, Anran, and have deeply appreciated the love and sincere feedback from the Chinese player community since her debut,” the statement read.
“We understand that aesthetic preferences are rooted in different cultural backgrounds and personal perceptions. We have consistently communicated to the Blizzard team that Chinese players recognize and cherish Anran’s current image, and we will continue to ensure that these voices are fully heard in all subsequent discussions.”
The China operations team said it plays an active role in the appearance adjustment process and would remain involved if changes proceed.
Blizzard has indicated that any edit would come later in Season 1, with game director Aaron Keller noting that hero models are “incredibly complicated” and require testing before alterations are finalised.
