Steve Carell stars in HBO’s new comedy ‘Rooster,’ playing a bestselling author navigating college life and chaos

Steve Carell is set to return to television in the HBO comedy series Rooster, co-created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses. 

The 10-episode series will premiere on March 8 at 10 p.m., with episodes airing weekly through May 10.

In Rooster, Carell portrays a bestselling author known for a popular book series. His character is drawn back into college life after visiting his daughter, played by Charly Clive, a professor who accidentally burned down a faculty house and punched her husband, a fellow professor. The storyline follows Carell as he engages with students, attends frat parties, and attempts to embody the persona of “Rooster,” the charming protagonist of his novels.

The series also features Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai. Lawrence and Tarses serve as co-showrunners and executive producers alongside Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer, Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, Anthony King, David Hyman, and Carell himself. Production is handled by Warner Bros. Television, with both Doozer and Tarses under overall deals at the studio.

Carell, widely recognized for his role as Michael Scott in the U.S. adaptation of The Office, recently appeared in Jesse Armstrong’s HBO film Mountainhead and Tina Fey’s Netflix series The Four Seasons. Lawrence continues to juggle multiple projects, including Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Bad Monkey, and the upcoming Scrubs reboot on ABC.
