US news anchor Savannah Guthrie has issued a public appeal for the return of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, after authorities said the 84-year-old was likely abducted from her home in Arizona over the weekend.

In an emotional video posted on Instagram, the NBC presenter appeared alongside her siblings to address those believed to be holding their mother. “We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen,” she said. “Please reach out to us.”

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing after disappearing during the night from her home in the Catalina Foothills area, north-east of Tucson. Pima County Sheriff’s Office said investigators suspect she was taken against her will and are working with the FBI to authenticate a possible ransom note sent to at least one media outlet.

In the video, Savannah Guthrie asked for proof that her mother is alive, saying, “We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her.”

Officials said no suspect or person of interest has been identified. Sheriff Chris Nanos described an extensive search involving dogs, drones, helicopters and federal agents, adding that detectives found a scene at the home that caused “grave concern”.

Guthrie warned that her mother could be in serious danger without vital medication. “She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive. She needs it not to suffer,” she said.

US President Donald Trump said he had directed federal law enforcement agencies to assist local authorities, stating that all available resources would be used to help “get her mother home safely”.

Savannah Guthrie has withdrawn from hosting NBC’s upcoming Winter Olympics coverage as the search continues, while community prayer gatherings have been organised in Tucson for Nancy Guthrie’s safe return.
