John Lithgow discusses Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling views, and new film ‘Jimpa’
John Lithgow opens up on playing Dumbledore, responding to J.K. Rowling’s views, and his new film ‘Jimpa’

Actor John Lithgow spoke about his role as Dumbledore in the upcoming “Harry Potter” series during a Q&A at the Rotterdam Film Festival, where his latest film, “Jimpa,” premiered.
Lithgow addressed public concern over J.K. Rowling’s controversial statements on transgender issues.
“I take the subject extremely seriously,” Lithgow said. “She has created this amazing canon for young people, but her views are ironic and inexplicable. I’ve never met her, and she isn’t involved in this production, but the team I’m working with is remarkable.” Lithgow emphasized that he decided not to walk away from the role despite public pressure. “It was a hard decision. People insisted I step back, but I chose not to do that.”
Lithgow also shared enthusiasm for continuing as Dumbledore over the next eight years. “I just turned 80, and I’ve signed a contract to play Dumbledore until I’m 88,” he joked, adding that the character remains a “beautiful role” emphasizing kindness and acceptance.
Regarding his new film “Jimpa,” Lithgow praised co-star Olivia Colman and director Sophie Hyde. The film explores family, acceptance, and LGBTQ+ experiences, inspired by Hyde’s personal history. Lithgow described the filming process as collaborative and immersive, noting the emotional depth the actors brought to their roles.
“Jimpa allowed me to explore the realities of empathy, kindness, and human connection,” Lithgow said. He reflected on his career, emphasizing the importance of storytelling and creating authentic moments for audiences.
“Even after decades in film and theater, moments like this remind you why you act—for empathy, for connection, and for the shared human experience,” he concluded.
