Charlie Puth bares it all on new album ‘Whatever’s Clever!’ as fatherhood and Super Bowl collide
Charlie Puth opens up on new album ‘Whatever’s Clever!’, balancing Super Bowl, tour and first child milestones

Charlie Puth has entered a transformative phase, both personally and professionally, with the release of his fourth album, Whatever’s Clever!. Following the Phil Collins-inspired lead single Changes in October, Puth has been navigating a whirlwind of performances, including residencies at the Blue Note in Los Angeles and New York, a National Anthem performance at the Super Bowl, and several follow-up singles featuring Kenny G and Hikaru Utada. Adding to the momentum, Puth and his wife Brooke welcomed their first child just three days before the album dropped.
In a Zoom interview conducted while walking on a treadmill, Puth described the process of creating Whatever’s Clever! as a rare opportunity to take his time and explore emotion without compromise. “I didn’t have the luxury of time on the last three albums,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve had just a few months to sit and tell the truth.” The album spans sultry R&B, city pop, gospel, and what Puth dubs “yacht rock 2026,” reflecting a matured sound shaped by collaboration with executive producer BloodPop and artists including Coco Jones, Ravyn Lenae, Jeff Goldblum, Michael McDonald, and Kenny Loggins.
Puth embraced vulnerability in his songwriting, allowing personal stories and self-reflection to guide tracks like I Used to Be Cringe, which closes the album. He explained that the unfiltered emotion was crucial to the record’s authenticity. Collaborating with legendary artists on Love in Exile provided further depth, blending their influences with Puth’s modern style. A track like New Jersey combines absurd humour with nostalgia, taking aim at childhood heartbreaks while celebrating his home state.
Despite his packed schedule, Puth is taking time to savour his milestones, from performing at the Super Bowl to preparing for his upcoming arena tour starting April 22 in San Diego. Balancing fatherhood with an intense professional life, he acknowledges the challenges ahead. “There’s gonna be times when I don’t get to see the baby, which is gonna be tough,” he said. Yet even in this hectic period, he finds reassurance in music, noting a perfect moment during his Super Bowl performance when the planes flew over as the orchestra hit a D major chord.
Whatever’s Clever! is Charlie Puth at his most candid, bridging personal revelation with musical experimentation.
