Haley Kalil and Matt Kalil’s lawsuit explained: How a viral comment led to legal action
Years after their divorce, Haley and Matt Kalil are now in a legal fight

Haley Kalil and her ex-husband, former NFL player Matt Kalil, were believed to be on amicable terms following their 2022 divorce.
That perception shifted after a viral livestream comment made by the influencer late last year escalated into a legal dispute that is now unfolding in court.
The controversy first surfaced in November 2025, when Haley made candid remarks about her former marriage during a livestream.
A brief clip from the discussion quickly spread across social media, prompting widespread attention. Haley later clarified that the viral moment did not reflect the full context of the conversation and said she intended to respect her ex-husband’s privacy.
While the incident initially appeared to be short-lived online discourse, it has regained attention in January 2026 due to recent legal filings. Matt Kalil filed a lawsuit earlier this month alleging invasion of privacy, according to court documents reported by Us Weekly. Haley has since moved to dismiss the case, shifting the matter from a viral controversy to an active legal dispute.
In the lawsuit, Matt claims the remarks subjected him to unwanted public attention and caused reputational harm. He is seeking damages exceeding $75,000. Haley, through her legal team, has denied the allegations and said she was “shocked and hurt” by the filing, maintaining that the livestream included positive remarks about her former spouse.
Earlier this week, Haley formally asked a judge to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the claims raise serious First Amendment concerns and attempt to expand privacy law beyond its established limits. Matt’s legal team has pushed back, saying the case centers on protecting private marital details rather than restricting free expression.
The dispute has attracted attention beyond celebrity news circles because of its broader legal implications, particularly around privacy, public figures and social media speech.
Haley and Matt married in 2015 and divorced in 2022, citing irreconcilable differences. Haley has previously described the split as amicable, while Matt has since remarried and welcomed a child.
The case remains pending, with a court decision on the motion to dismiss expected in the coming weeks.
