Netflix has released a new documentary examining the 2002 kidnapping and rescue of Elizabeth Smart, with the survivor revisiting the events and reflecting on their lasting impact.
Titled Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart, the film recounts the night in June 2002 when Smart was taken from her Arlington Hills home in Salt Lake City at the age of 14.
The documentary details how Brian David Mitchell abducted her from the bedroom she shared with her younger sister, Mary Katherine. Mitchell, who described himself as a prophet, and his wife Wanda Barzee held Smart captive for several months.
The film revisits the large-scale response that followed Smart’s disappearance, including extensive media coverage and law enforcement efforts.
Smart was eventually rescued in March 2003 after witnesses contacted police, saying they recognised Mitchell and Barzee from a televised sketch.
Mary Katherine Smart played a key role in identifying Mitchell, recognising his voice as that of a man who had previously worked at the family’s home. She appears in the documentary alongside other family members.
Reflecting on her sister’s actions, Smart said on NBC’s Today Show, “She’s my hero. She saved me. Had she not remembered who had kidnapped me, who’s to say that I would be here today?”
Smart was located on State Street in Sandy and rescued by police shortly afterwards. The documentary includes interviews with Smart, her father Ed Smart, local law enforcement officers and journalists who covered the case.
Smart said revisiting her experience publicly is intended to support other survivors. Speaking to Today, she explained, “I remember how alone I felt when I first came home, because nobody talked about kidnapping or abuse or rape.” She added that sharing her story is important so “other victims don’t feel alone either”.
The documentary also addresses the continued public interest in the case, something Smart said still surprises her years later.
Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart is now available to stream on Netflix.
