PMD warns of rain, cold spell as westerly wave hits Karachi, Sindh

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert for Karachi and large parts of Sindh, warning that a westerly weather system is expected to affect the province from Thursday, bringing rain and a noticeable drop in temperatures.
According to the forecast issued on Wednesday by the Duty Forecasting Officer on behalf of the Chief Meteorologist, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely in Karachi Division on Thursday, January 22.
The system is also expected to impact several other districts, including Jamshoro, Dadu, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, and Tando Muhammad Khan.
Thunderstorms are forecast for northern and eastern parts of the province, including Sukkur, Ghotki, Larkana, and Mirpurkhas.
The PMD said Karachi’s weather is expected to shift from dry conditions to mostly cloudy skies with rainfall.

Forecasters noted that humidity levels in Karachi could rise to between 80 and 90 per cent on Thursday morning as the rain arrives. Following the passage of the westerly wave, north-westerly winds from Balochistan are expected to affect the city.
The weather office has also warned of a cold spell, with Karachi likely to experience a cold night on Friday, January 23.
Minimum temperatures are expected to fall between 7 and 9 degrees Celsius, accompanied by dry north-westerly winds and a sharp drop in evening humidity to around 15 per cent.

The PMD said it has informed relevant authorities, including the Governor's House of Sindh, the Chief Secretary, the Mayor of Karachi, and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. Essential services, including K-Electric and Rescue 1122, have also been alerted in view of the expected weather conditions.
