Psychiatrist warns of mental stress in youth
Says it can have lasting effect on emotional wellbeing, studies and future prospects

A leading psychiatrist has warned of rising mental stress among the youth, urging families, schools and media outlets to raise awareness, provide support and promote a culture of mental well-being to safeguard their emotional and academic future.
While speaking to the media, psychiatrist Dr Uzma Ali voiced serious concern over rising mental stress among the youth, warning that if left unaddressed, it could severely affect their emotional wellbeing, academic performance and overall future prospects.
She emphasised that mental health challenges are escalating rapidly, making early detection and intervention crucial. She explained that families and friends should remain vigilant for warning signs such as loneliness, lack of interest, laziness, persistent negativity, loss of pleasure in life. These signs could even indicate suicidal intent among mentally stressed individual.
She stressed that recognising these symptoms early can save lives and provide timely support to those struggling with psychological pressure. She also highlighted the important role of schools in addressing mental health issues, urging the inclusion of mental health education in the curriculum to help students manage stress and develop coping strategies. According to her, educating youth about emotional well-being from an early age is essential for building resilience and preventing long-term psychological consequences.
Dr Uzma Ali further called on the media to launch awareness programmes and campaigns to educate the public, reduce stigma and promote mental well-being across society. She emphasised that a combined effort from families, schools and media is vital to create a supportive environment for youth and ensure that mental health receives the attention it urgently needs.
