New details have emerged about Star Wars: Starfighter after director Shawn Levy revealed that Tom Cruise played an unexpected role in the film’s production. The upcoming Star Wars entry stars Ryan Gosling and is scheduled for release on 28 May 2027.
Speaking in an interview with the New York Times, Levy said Cruise visited the set in November while filming was underway.
Although Cruise does not appear on screen, Levy confirmed that the actor assisted behind the camera during production. “Last week, Steven Spielberg was here. And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes,” Levy said.
Levy explained that what began as a joking suggestion turned into Cruise actively helping to film part of the movie.
Cruise ultimately assisted in shooting one of the lightsaber battle sequences. “Now when you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom,” Levy added.
Star Wars: Starfighter is set approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While plot details remain limited, an official description states: “In a rebuilding galaxy, a solitary pilot becomes entangled in a crucial mission as new threats emerge. Their journey may alter the future of the Force itself.”
The film has recently completed principal photography. Levy has not indicated whether Cruise’s involvement will extend beyond the brief filming contribution already disclosed.
News of Cruise’s participation prompted widespread reaction on social media, where fans commented on his willingness to take part in hands-on filmmaking.
Several posts highlighted his reputation for engaging directly with action and production work, even when not appearing on screen.
Star Wars: Starfighter is directed by Shawn Levy and marks the next major theatrical release in the franchise following a period of fewer large-scale cinema projects.
