Comedian and actress Kathy Griffin has spoken publicly about her childhood, alleging that her late eldest brother was abusive.

She reflected on the lasting emotional impact while discussing the recent deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

In a YouTube video posted on December 16 titled “Remembering Rob Reiner | Also, a Condemnation of Gun Violence,” Griffin addressed the Reiners’ deaths and drew parallels to her own family’s struggles with a troubled sibling. Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead earlier this month, and their son, Nick Reiner, has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is expected to plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

During the video, Griffin alleged that her late brother, Kenneth, struggled with substance abuse, violence, and untreated mental illness. She claimed he was abusive toward partners and accused him of molesting children, allegations she said were shared with her by others during her childhood. Griffin noted that her brother died years ago and that the claims were never adjudicated.

Griffin described growing up as the youngest of five children and said her parents spent much of their lives trying to help Kenneth. She stated that the situation caused deep divisions within her family, particularly because she refused to maintain contact with him.

“You don’t get over it,” Griffin said, referring to the long-term effects of childhood trauma. She explained that speaking out about her experiences previously caused tension with relatives but felt it was important to be honest.

Griffin said the Reiner case resonated with her because it reflected the complexity of families dealing with addiction, mental illness, and violence, emphasizing that such situations rarely have simple explanations or resolutions.
