Jake Paul was taken to hospital with a double fracture of his jaw after suffering a brutal knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua in Miami, following a mismatch that ended in the sixth round early Saturday morning.
The YouTuber-turned-boxer managed to survive six rounds against the former heavyweight champion before Joshua’s power proved decisive. Paul was knocked down twice in the fifth round and again twice in the sixth, prompting the referee to stop the contest.
Despite the severity of the punishment, Paul was well enough to speak immediately after the fight, admitting he feared his jaw had been fractured.
That concern was later confirmed when his promoter, Nakisa Bidarian, revealed that scans showed a double break. Paul even drove himself to hospital after the bout, according to his team.
Recovery time is expected to be between four and six weeks. The 28-year-old later shared images of his X-rays on social media, along with graphic photos and videos showing bloodied damage to his jaw following the knockout.
Speaking in the ring moments after the fight, Paul appeared in surprisingly good spirits. “I’m feeling good. That was fun. I love this sport,” he said, despite visibly spitting blood. From his hospital bed, he later joked online: “Double broken jaw. Give me Canelo in 10 days.”
Reflecting on the loss, Paul said he plans to take time away from boxing after six intense years in the sport. “I’m going to take a little break. I’ve been going hard for six years,” he said. “We’ll heal the broken jaw, come back, and fight people my weight.”
While acknowledging Joshua’s dominance, Paul insisted the experience had not shaken his belief. “Anthony Joshua is a great fighter. I got beat, but that’s what this sport is about,” he said, adding that he felt fatigue, rather than fear, ultimately cost him the fight.
The Florida Athletic Commission has handed Paul an automatic 60-day suspension, in line with regulations that mandate a medical layoff following a knockout. The suspension could be extended depending on medical evaluations.
Bidarian downplayed long-term concerns, noting that jaw fractures are not uncommon in combat sports. “We met with Netflix afterward, he took a shower, and then drove himself to the hospital,” he said. “Doctors we’ve spoken to expect a four-to-six-week recovery.”
Despite the setback, Paul reiterated his ambition to pursue a cruiserweight world title once healed, emphasizing that the sport has positively transformed his life.
Meanwhile, Joshua wasted no time shifting focus to his next potential challenge. In the ring after his victory, the British heavyweight called out longtime rival Tyson Fury, urging him to come out of retirement.
“If Tyson Fury is serious, put the Twitter fingers down and put the gloves on,” Joshua said. “Step into the ring with me and talk with your fists.”
Fury officially retired in January but has done so multiple times before and recently hinted at a possible return in 2026, fueling speculation that the long-awaited showdown could finally materialize.
