Wiz Khalifa sentenced to nine months in Romania for drug possession
American rapper Wiz Khalifa was sentenced to nine months in Romania for personal drug possession, court says

American rapper Wiz Khalifa, born Thomaz Cameron Jibril, has been sentenced to nine months in prison in Romania for possession of drugs for personal use. The decision, handed down on December 18, 2025, by the Constanța Court of Appeal, comes after an appeal filed by the DIICOT – Constanța Territorial Service partially overturned a previous ruling by the Constanța Tribunal, which had only imposed a fine of 3,000 lei.
According to the court, the sentence was imposed under Law No. 143/2000, which governs the unlawful possession of dangerous drugs for personal use. The decision is final and cannot be appealed, in line with Romanian law. Wiz Khalifa was briefly detained during the proceedings in 2024 but was later released without being remanded in custody. Authorities emphasised that this case does not concern trafficking or distribution offences and relates solely to personal possession.
Romanian law sets strict penalties for possession, ranging from three months to two years in prison or a fine. This makes Romania one of the European countries with the harshest regulations regarding illegal drugs. While several European nations and certain U.S. states have decriminalised possession for personal use or only issue administrative fines, Romania maintains a firm legal framework against any unlawful possession of narcotics.
The rapper’s legal issues have generated attention internationally due to his high-profile status and the difference in drug laws between countries. In many jurisdictions, possession of small amounts for personal use does not lead to criminal liability, highlighting the contrasting approach of Romanian authorities.
This sentence adds to the ongoing debate about drug policy and enforcement in Europe, particularly for foreign nationals who may not be familiar with local regulations. Wiz Khalifa’s case underscores the importance of understanding differing legal standards abroad and the potential consequences for violations, even when the quantities involved are for personal use.
