Oscars to enter streaming era with move to YouTube

The Academy Awards will leave broadcast television for the first time in nearly six decades, ending their long-running run on ABC after the 100th ceremony in 2028.

Beginning in 2029, YouTube will become the exclusive global home of the Oscars under a multi-year deal running through 2033.

Announcing the move, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said the partnership will “expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible” while honoring the Oscars’ legacy.

The ceremony will stream live and free globally on YouTube, with additional access for YouTube TV subscribers in the United States. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan called the Oscars “one of our essential cultural institutions,” adding that the partnership is intended to bring the celebration of filmmaking to viewers around the world and “inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers.”

The agreement also includes red carpet coverage, behind-the-scenes content, the Oscar nominations announcement, the Governors Awards, and other Academy events, significantly expanding the show’s digital presence.

The move reflects the Academy’s growing focus on streaming as traditional television audiences decline, while marking a major milestone in YouTube’s expansion into high-profile live entertainment.
