Larian Studios, the developer behind 2023’s Baldur’s Gate 3, appears to be returning to its original fantasy universe with a new project titled Divinity.

The studio’s plans were hinted at following the appearance of a spiky monolith in the Mojave Desert and the registration of related trademarks ahead of The Game Awards 2025.

Divinity is a series of six games developed by Larian between 2002 and 2017. While it may be unfamiliar to newer fans drawn in by Baldur’s Gate 3, those who have followed the studio will recognise the title as a return to Rivellon, a richly detailed fantasy world.

The setting features multiple races including humans, elves, dwarves, lizard-like beings, and the living dead, with magic playing a central role, although sorcery is more strictly regulated than in Dungeons & Dragons.

The world also blends elements from steampunk, sci-fi, and humour, drawing influence from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, with Rhianna Pratchett contributing a tie-in novella for Divinity II.

The Divinity series has experimented with varied gameplay styles, from action RPGs like Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity, to third-person RPGs such as Divinity 2: Ego Draconis, strategy games like Divinity: Dragon Commander, and the turn-based Original Sin duology that most closely resembles Baldur’s Gate 3. Each game is set years apart, allowing new players to enter at any point without prior knowledge of the series.

Fans familiar with Original Sin 2 will recognise gameplay systems influencing Baldur’s Gate 3, including origin story characters, elemental effects, and tactical turn-based combat.

While details of the new Divinity project remain scarce, the trademark and the monolith suggest Larian is preparing to expand Rivellon’s lore for both returning fans and a wider audience.
