John Cena’s legendary WWE career will reach its final chapter on December 13, when he steps into the ring one last time against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Gunther secured the honour of being Cena’s farewell opponent after defeating LA Knight in the final of the Last Time Is Now tournament on the December 5 episode of SmackDown.
The month-long, 16-man tournament had Gunther marked as the favourite from the start, given his reputation as one of WWE’s most complete in-ring performers.
WWE fans will remember that Gunther has previously closed the book on another major career: he retired Goldberg with a decisive victory at Saturday Night’s Main Event in July.
His selection as Cena’s final rival, therefore, feels fitting and symbolic.
The showdown on December 13 will also be the first-ever singles match between Cena and Gunther, presenting a high-stakes, generational clash. Gunther now has the opportunity to bid Cena farewell with a dominant performance, while the 17-time world champion has the chance to end his storied run with one last triumphant moment.
Gunther’s win on SmackDown came after an intense, pay-per-view–level bout against LA Knight. With Cena’s retirement match hanging in the balance, both men fought with urgency and precision.
Ultimately, Gunther gained control, first locking in a Rear-Naked Choke and then transitioning to a crushing Modified STF — a pointed message aimed directly at Cena. Knight fought valiantly but was forced to submit.
Cena, who debuted for WWE in 2002, leaves behind a two-decade legacy defined by era-defining rivalries, blockbuster matches, and unmatched crossover appeal. From Doctor of Thuganomics to franchise face, he has remained one of WWE’s most beloved figures.
Now, with Gunther standing across from him, Cena prepares for his final bow — setting the stage for a farewell match that promises to be as dramatic and unforgettable as the career it concludes.
