A24 has released the first trailer for Mother Mary, giving audiences a striking look at Anne Hathaway’s latest transformation in what the studio describes as a “psychosexual pop thriller.”

Directed and written by David Lowery, the film blends haunting visuals, eerie tension and bold musical elements to create one of the most anticipated cinematic events of 2026.

Hathaway stars as a global pop icon preparing for a high-stakes comeback performance. As the trailer reveals, she reconnects with her former best friend and longtime costume designer, played by Michaela Coel. Their reunion quickly turns complicated, hinting at emotional fractures, buried betrayals and possibly supernatural undertones. The imagery suggests themes of obsession, power and perhaps witchcraft, adding a genre-bending edge to the story.

Boosting the film’s anticipation is its soundtrack, featuring original songs from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff and FKA Twigs. Twigs also appears in the film as part of an ensemble cast that includes Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown and Sian Clifford.

Mother Mary marks another bold shift for Lowery, known for his eclectic filmography ranging from the introspective fantasy The Green Knight to the family-friendly Peter Pan & Wendy. Hathaway, who won an Oscar for her performance in Les Misérables, returns to a musically driven role, while Charli XCX continues her run of major film collaborations heading into 2026.

With its blend of psychological tension, stylish visuals and original pop music, Mother Mary is already shaping up to be a standout release in A24’s upcoming slate.
