Faisalabad set to have largest wastewater treatment plant
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Faisalabad is set to mark a major milestone as the foundation stone for Punjab's largest and first 33 million gallons per day (MGD) wastewater treatment plant will be laid on Tuesday (today).
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to inaugurate the landmark project, highlighting the government's commitment to sustainable urban development and environmental protection.
Ahead of the chief minister's visit, Provincial Secretary of Housing, Urban Development, and Public Health Engineering Department (HUD & PHED), Noorul Amin Mengal, along with WASA Managing Director Sohail Qadir Cheema, visited the project site to review preparations.
The project is being launched in collaboration with the Danish International Development Agency (Danida), Sustainable Infrastructure Finance (DSIF) and the Punjab government.
Valued at Rs56 billion, Danida will provide Rs53 billion as a tied loan and grant, while the Punjab government will contribute Rs3 billion as a partner.
The plant will be developed under a Design, Build, and Operate (DBO) model and is expected to be completed by September 2028.
The comprehensive project encompasses the construction of a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) along with the rehabilitation of Main Channel 4 and the installation of a trunk sewer line connecting it to the plant. Additionally, a main force line will be established to discharge the treated water into the Gogera Branch Canal.
