Pokimane buying herself an engagement ring prompts mixed reactions online
Pokimane’s decision to buy herself an engagement ring has drawn mixed reactions across the internet

Imane Anys, known online as Pokimane, has prompted wide discussion after revealing that she purchased an engagement ring for herself.
The Canadian streamer shared the update on TikTok, explaining that the idea came from fan reactions to a previous video. She told viewers, “The person that you are ‘engaged to’ the most in your entire lifetime is your damn self.” She also showcased the ring, a white gold diamond band from Bulgari’s Serpenti collection.
The announcement attracted significant attention on TikTok, where many users expressed support. Comments praised the message of self-affirmation, with one viewer saying it represented what they appreciated about women’s empowerment.
Another encouraged others to look after themselves and consider doing something similar if it brought them happiness. Some fans described her decision as an example of prioritising personal wellbeing.
Reactions on X, formerly Twitter, were more divided. Several users criticised the move, describing the gesture in negative terms. Podcaster and streamer Keemstar referred to the decision as “cringe,” while another user questioned, “How desperate do you have to be to post something like this?”
The mixed response contributed to the wider online conversation about self-gifting and public declarations of self-commitment.
Pokimane has previously drawn commentary for her online presence. In 2022, she received a 48-hour Twitch suspension after streaming television episodes without the required licensing.
She has also faced criticism for the use of slang, including incidents linked to AAVE, and for a short clip in which she joked, “women belong in the kitchen,” a line she later apologised for. In late 2023, she was criticised for remarks about her snack brand when she called some of her viewers “broke.”
Her latest announcement has again placed her at the centre of online debate, with responses ranging from support for the gesture to a critique of its presentation on social media.
