Gangs target Karachi car showrooms and traders via SMS

Law enforcement agencies have launched raids across the city following a surge in extortion incidents. The investigation into the firing at a car showroom on New MA Jinnah Road is underway.

Investigators revealed that the suspects involved in the New MA Jinnah Road incident used cellular phone services rather than social media platforms to issue threats. The group fired at the showroom before sending a text message via SMS.

The message read: "This is a trailer. If you don’t pay Rs5 million by 7pm, the full film will start."

After targeting builders, extortionists have turned their attention to showroom owners. Traders, builders and showroom owners have reported receiving calls from both domestic and international numbers. Authorities suspect the involvement of a gang led by Ahmed Ali Magsi.

Separately, the Rangers arrested a suspected extortionist, Qasim alias Qaso, in Malir yesterday. He was wanted in several cases of extortion and targeted killings. The Special Investigation Unit is interrogating the suspect.

Police have received multiple complaints recently regarding the resurgence of extortion in the metropolis. In District Malir, a food centre owner received a call from an international number demanding Rs2 million as "party fund". Malir City police have registered a case.

In another incident yesterday, a trader in Manghopir received an extortion demand of Rs100 million.
