PESHAWAR:

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has warned that climate change is emerging as a grave threat to Pakistan's environment, weather systems, agriculture, infrastructure and most critically, its water resources.

He stressed that an integrated strategy is now unavoidable to confront the challenge.

Speaking at a seminar in Peshawar on climate change and its impact on water reserves on Wednesday, the governor said shifting weather patterns were already disrupting crop cycles, irrigation systems and natural water sources.

"Short-term and long-term planning is essential to safeguard ourselves from the effects of environmental change; otherwise, future generations will face serious problems," he cautioned.

Kundi stressed the urgent need to expand water storage capacity, calling the construction of new dams crucial for the province.

He noted that larger water reservoirs were now more necessary than ever to sustain agricultural productivity and counter the threat of future droughts, adding that increased water storage would be fundamental to food security.

He also emphasised that large-scale afforestation was indispensable for restoring environmental balance. "Trees not only help reduce temperatures but also play a vital role in maintaining groundwater levels."

The governor further highlighted the need to improve and expand the canal system across the province to strengthen irrigation and water distribution.

Warning that underground water reserves were depleting rapidly, Kundi said careful and responsible usage was now imperative. "If we do not use this water wisely today, we may face a severe crisis in the future," he warned.

The governor stressed that responding to climate change was not solely the responsibility of the government and that citizens, too, must play their part.

He said that adopting environmentally friendly lifestyles, preventing water wastage and participating in tree plantation campaigns were responsibilities shared by every individual.
