Daniel Radcliffe, who famously played Harry Potter in Warner Bros.’ eight-film franchise from 2001 to 2011, revealed on Good Morning America that he reached out to the young actor taking over the role in HBO’s upcoming television reboot.

Radcliffe wrote a letter to Dominic McLaughlin, expressing his support and wishing him a positive experience in the new series.

McLaughlin, who will star opposite Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron, reportedly responded with a “very sweet note” back.

“I wouldn’t say that anyone who is going to play Harry has to [reach out to me], but I know a few people working on the production,” Radcliffe explained. “I wrote to Dominic and sent him a letter, and he sent me a very sweet note back.”

Radcliffe emphasized that his gesture was meant as encouragement rather than oversight. “I don’t want to be a specter in the life of these children, but I just wanted to write to him to say, ‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did, I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time,’” he said.

He added that seeing photos of the young cast inspired a warm reaction: “I just see these pictures of him and the other kids, and I just want to hug them. They just seem so young. I just look at them and say, ‘Oh, it’s crazy I was doing that at that age.’ But it’s also incredibly sweet, and I hope they’re having a great time.”

The HBO series cast also includes Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley.

Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden has reportedly built a temporary school on set so the young actors can keep up with their studies while filming, which is planned to cover each book in J.K. Rowling’s series over multiple seasons.

The new “Harry Potter” television series is scheduled to debut in 2027.
