Country music artist Todd Snider has died at the age of 59 following a period marked by health complications and legal difficulties.

A statement posted on his Instagram on November 15 confirmed that the singer-songwriter had “departed this world” after several challenging weeks. His team reflected on his creative life, writing that “He relayed so much tenderness and sensitivity through his songs, and showed many of us how to look at the world through a different lens,” adding that he was constantly working to honour the songwriters who inspired him.

His loved ones pledged to continue sharing his work, asking fans to revisit his music.

Snider had recently faced legal issues. On November 5, he was arrested in Salt Lake City on charges of disorderly conduct, threat of violence and trespassing while on his High, Lonesome and Then Some Tour. He was released and treated in hospital for injuries. Days earlier, the tour had been cancelled after his team said he suffered “severe injuries” as “the victim of a violent assault outside of his hotel.”

Ten days after the arrest, his team announced he had been hospitalised with pneumonia, noting that he had been “quietly suffering from an undiagnosed case of walking pneumonia.” His condition later became more complex, and he was transferred for further treatment.

Snider was a prominent figure in alt country following the success of his 2004 album East Nashville Skyline. His songs were recorded by Garth Brooks, Tom Jones and Loretta Lynn, and he was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. His final album, High, Lonesome and Then Some, was released in October.
