Artist mimics nature in works of clay

The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), National Heritage & Culture Division, presented "Aatish", a solo exhibition of ceramic works by eminent artist Nabahat Lotia which was curated by Mariam Ahmed.
The exhibition was inaugurated by PNCA Director General M. Ayub Jamali, on Tuesday, 11 November 2025, at Gallery No. 3, National Art Gallery, PNCA, Islamabad.
The exhibition showcased Nabahat Lotia's lifelong engagement with clay and nature, reflecting over three decades of artistic exploration. With 18 solo exhibitions to her credit, the artist has collaborated closely with traditional potters across Pakistan to preserve and evolve local pottery practices. Her recent book, "Pottery Traditions of Pakistan," chronicles this rich journey and underscores her commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage.
Speaking about her creative process, Lotia remarked, "Nature is my inspiration, and my work has always been in harmony with it." Aatish - meaning "fire" - celebrated the transformative power of flame in shaping clay into works of art, symbolising endurance, change and renewal.
Speaking about the exhibition, Visual Arts Division Curator- Director Mariam Ahmed said, "Nabahat Lotia's work is a testament to her dedication to her craft and her deep connection with nature. 'Aatish' is a celebration of the transformative power of art and the enduring legacy of Pakistan's pottery traditions."
In conjunction with the exhibition, PNCA will also host a ceramic workshop to be led by the artist from 12 to 14 November, from 11am to 3pm at PNCA, Islamabad.
