Sydney Sweeney earns most flops of 2025
Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Christy’ biopic flops as her MAGA ties and American Eagle ad spark backlash online

Sydney Sweeney has endured one of the toughest years of her career, with four box office flops marking a dramatic downturn for the Euphoria star. Her Christy Martin biopic opened to just $1.3 million, placing among the weakest wide releases of the year, while Americana, Eden and Echo Valley also underperformed. The films collectively cemented Sweeney’s reputation for struggling to connect with audiences beyond her TV work.
Much of the criticism stems from a swirl of political controversy. Sweeney’s American Eagle denim campaign, which featured the pun ‘great genes’ instead of ‘great jeans,’ drew widespread backlash, with some accusing her of endorsing eugenics. While American Eagle defended the ad as harmless wordplay, public opinion quickly linked the campaign to her Republican voter registration in Florida, which came shortly after her purchase of a Florida Keys mansion.
Fans and critics alike have voiced disappointment at Sweeney’s handling of the backlash. In interviews and social media posts, she defended the Christy biopic and the ad, emphasising her love of jeans and pride in portraying the boxer’s story. “I am so deeply proud of this movie. Proud of the film David made. Proud of the story we told. Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin,” she wrote on Instagram. Yet her refusal to publicly denounce white supremacy or comment on her political affiliations has drawn sharp criticism, with some branding her a ‘career risk’ in Hollywood.
Her co-stars have reportedly distanced themselves amid growing tension. Social media erupted with criticism of her perceived silence, and fans noted that her high-profile work on Euphoria now appears to be the only major credit keeping her career afloat. Online discussions have been heated, with some users declaring that Sweeney’s political choices and the controversial American Eagle campaign have irreversibly damaged her prospects.
Despite the backlash, Sweeney remains unapologetic, maintaining that art and politics should be treated separately. Yet as Hollywood continues to respond to her public profile, it seems 2025 will be remembered as a pivotal, if turbulent, year for the actress.
