Revered academic Dr Arfa Syeda Zehra passes away

Literary icons and colleagues remember late scholar, term her death an 'irreplaceable loss'

Dr Arfa Syeda Zehra, one of Pakistan’s most influential educationists and human rights activists, passed away on Monday in Lahore at the age of 83.

Recognised for her extensive knowledge of Urdu and literature, Dr Arfa was a renowned specialist in history and social issues in South Asia, discussing complex matters with clarity.

She studied at the Lahore College for Women and then the Government College University, going on to earn her Ph.D. in History from the University of Hawaii.

Dr Arfa served as the Principal of the Lahore College for Women and was also named Professor Emeritus at Forman Christian College.

Through bold statements and passionate advocacy for the promotion of women’s rights, historical awareness, and ethical governance, Dr Arfa also became a famous guest in talk shows and conferences.

Securing respect and admiration, she secured roles on a governmental level as well – serving as Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Education and National Cohesion and as Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women.

Dr Arfa even gained international acclaim, holding a UNESCO Chair in Cultural Heritage. She used this post to vie for the protection and preservation of Pakistan’s intellectual and literary traditions.

A respected teacher, literary, specialist, and reformer, Dr Arfa's death marks the loss of a voice deeply respected for contributions to women empowerment, educational reforms, language rights and equitable social development.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over her death and paid tribute to her contributions to knowledge and teaching, research, and particularly her promotion and development of the Urdu language.

Muhammad Ahmed Shah, President of the Arts Council, termed Dr Arfa’s death a big tragedy for Pakistan, and stated that she, like Zia Mohyeddin, are one of a kind individuals who will never be forgotten.

Remembering how Dr Arfa undertook a somewhat sarcastic tone while discussing complex matters, Shah noted that she especially resonated with the younger generation.

He announced that a session will be held during the 18th Aalmi Urdu Conference to commemorate Dr Arfa’s life, achievements, personality, and legacy.

Noorul Huda Shah, renowned dramatist, poet, and writer, also termed Dr Arfa’s death an irreplaceable loss for the country.

Saying she knew Dr Arfa on a personal level for many years, Noorul Huda recalled the way Dr Arfa captivated audiences with her humour, simplicity, and informal manner of talking.

Ameena Syed, founder of the Karachi Literature Festival, termed Dr Arfa her 'murshad' (teacher or guide) and said she is grief-stricken over the loss.

Appreciating the way in which Dr Arfa conversed on spiritual, philosophical, and societal issues with grace and simplicity, Syed remarked that Dr Arfa has left behind a gap that cannot be filled.
