The forthcoming Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, has already broken two major records before its release, with the teaser trailer drawing over 116 million views within its first 24 hours online.
According to data from WaveMetrix (via Deadline), the Michael teaser became the most-watched trailer in Lionsgate’s history, surpassing all previous launches by the studio.
It also achieved the highest 24-hour view count for any music biopic or concert film, surpassing Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which held the previous record at 96.1 million views.
Other notable titles in the genre include Bob Marley: One Love with 60.1 million views, Bohemian Rhapsody with 57.6 million, and A Complete Unknown with 47.2 million.
The trailer’s strong performance indicates significant anticipation for the film, which will chronicle Jackson’s rise from his early days with The Jackson 5 to his peak as the “King of Pop.”
While trailer success does not always translate directly to box office earnings, Michael has the potential to join the ranks of major music biopics such as Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $910.8 million globally.
Other recent titles, including Elvis and Bob Marley: One Love, grossed $288.7 million and $180.8 million, respectively.
Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, will portray the late singer in his feature film debut. The cast also includes Miles Teller as attorney John Branca, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, and Kat Graham as Diana Ross.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, Michael aims to present “an intimate look at the life and enduring legacy of one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known.”
The film is scheduled for release in cinemas on April 24 2026.
