Meghan Markle to make acting return in Amazon MGM film ‘Close Personal Friends’ alongside Lily Collins and Brie Larson

Meghan Markle is making her first on-screen appearance in over seven years with a cameo role in the Amazon MGM comedy Close Personal Friends, Variety has confirmed. The movie, which is currently shooting in Los Angeles, stars Lily Collins, Brie Larson, Jack Quaid and Henry Golding. Markle’s participation marks a notable return to acting for the Duchess of Sussex, who stepped away from full-time screen roles after leaving the royal spotlight.

In Close Personal Friends, the plot centres on an ordinary couple who become friends with a celebrity couple during a trip to Santa Barbara but as boundaries blur, awkwardness and complications follow. Meghan has reportedly a smaller part, signalling a cautious re-entry into film rather than a full-leading role. Other cast members include Saturday Night Live alum Melissa Villaseñor, Natasia Demetriou, Anna Konkle, Patti Harrison, Jack Shalloo and Dustin Demri-Burns.

Markle last acted regularly in the legal drama Suits, which she left in 2018 after seven seasons. She also appeared in features such as Horrible Bosses and Remember Me, but has since focused on her and Prince Harry’s production banner, Archewell Productions. Through their deal with Netflix, Markle executive produced docuseries including Polo and Live to Lead, and starred in the lifestyle show With Love, Meghan, the second season of which aired earlier this year.

Her decision to return to acting suggests a new chapter in her public career. “It’s a new chapter, right?” Markle told Page Six back in 2018 when she left Suits. By appearing in this Amazon production, she seems willing to revisit her on-screen persona while maintaining a selective screen presence.

While Amazon MGM did not comment on Markle’s cameo, the move is likely to generate headlines given her high-profile transition from Hollywood to royalty and then to a more private advocacy role. Whether this cameo signals a wider return to film remains to be seen but for now, Meghan Markle is back in the frame.
