Social Media has a field day after Zohran Mamdani's historic win as NYC mayor
Social media users across the world celebrate Mamdani's win with a flood of positive messages and memes

Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani made history on November 4 after winning in the New York City mayoral elections and becoming the city’s first Muslim and socialist mayor.
The 34-year-old state assemblyman defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa to secured his place as the city's first Muslim mayor. Additionally Mamdani is also the first mayor of South Asian descent and the first born in Africa. After taking office on January 1, 2026, he will also be the youngest mayor in New York in over a century.
While his campaign was focused on making New York more affordable through rent stablisation, universal child care, and fare-free buses among other policies, Mamdani's social media savvy campaign also resonated deeply among young voters specifically.
As such, users on these platforms had a field day when Mamdani emerged victorious on Tuesday. Whilst positive, the most clever and funny reactions involved quips on the mayor-elect's background, often playing on the islamophobic and racist rhetoric that has been used to slander Mamdani.
While some users joked about "Sharia law" taking over NYC, others poked fun at Mamdani's critics as they anticipated their "crash-outs" after seeing him win.

I’m flying in to New York tomorrow, is there a grace period before sharia law kicks in or do I have to veil when I land?

In his victory speech, Mamdani declared “Hope is alive,” and expressed gratitude toward New Yorkers, saying, “This power is yours. This city belongs to you.”
In line with his campaign, the mayor-elect concluded his speech just as the iconic Bollywood song "Dhoom Machale" started blaring on the speakers.
