Jenny Han, creator and showrunner of The Summer I Turned Pretty, has confirmed that the emotional beach scene from Season 3 was filmed using original on-set audio and did not require ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement).

The clarification came directly from Han herself on TikTok, where she responded to a fan comment questioning the sound quality of the pivotal “beach confession” sequence. The fan, using the handle @blueberrypop, wrote, “The entire beach confession scene I promised was done this way. No way you can get clean audio with that amount of wind. All of those lines were done in a studio layer.”

Han replied, “Miraculously we actually did not need to ADR the beach scene!” The verified account comment quickly gained traction across TikTok, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter), as fans expressed surprise that such clear audio was captured naturally in windy beach conditions.

ADR, a common post-production process in television and film, involves re-recording dialogue in a studio to replace or enhance lines originally captured on set. Given the outdoor setting and the emotional tone of the scene — widely discussed by fans as one of Season 3’s standout moments — many viewers assumed the dialogue had been redubbed.

Han’s response confirms otherwise, suggesting that the production team managed to capture clean sound in real time during filming. Fans on Reddit’s The Summer I Turned Pretty forum shared screenshots of her comment, praising the show’s technical precision and authenticity.
