Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold has died at the age of 41 while awaiting a kidney transplant, the team confirmed on Sunday.

Mangold, a beloved figure among Jets fans and former teammates, had recently revealed he was battling a genetic condition that led to chronic kidney disease.

Earlier this month, Mangold shared that he was undergoing dialysis and in urgent need of a type O kidney donor, appealing to fans from both the Jets and Ohio State, where he was a college star. “After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant,” he wrote, thanking supporters for their kindness and prayers.

A first-round draft pick in 2006, Mangold spent his entire 11-season career with the Jets. Known for his toughness and leadership, he earned seven Pro Bowl selections and was twice named All-Pro, anchoring the offensive line alongside D’Brickashaw Ferguson.

Jets owner Woody Johnson paid tribute, calling Mangold “the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership defined an era of Jets football.”

After retiring in 2016, Mangold remained active in the community, becoming a high school coach in New Jersey and staying connected to the sport. Former coach Rex Ryan and teammate Darrelle Revis also honored him, with Revis writing on X, “I will miss you and forever cherish our moments in the locker room.”

Mangold is survived by his wife, Jenny, and their four children. His sister, Holley Mangold, represented Team USA in weightlifting at the 2012 Olympics.
