Rebel Wilson’s upcoming comedy Girl Group just added serious star power. Jennifer Coolidge and Nicole Scherzinger have officially joined the cast of the film, which Wilson is writing, directing and starring in.
The film follows Wilson as a pop diva who has been kicked out of her own girl group’s reunion tour and sentenced to community service. In a classic underdog twist, she attempts to stage a comeback by coaching a group of misfit teens for a record label audition.
While Coolidge and Scherzinger’s exact roles remain secret for now, their casting is already generating excitement. The project also reunites Scherzinger with former Pussycat Dolls bandmate Ashley Roberts, who plays a member of the film’s fictional band, Girlfriends. They’ll be joined by Melanie Chisholm of Spice Girls fame and Shaznay Lewis from All Saints, completing the ultimate pop nostalgia lineup.
The ensemble extends beyond the music icons. Randall Park, Sheridan Smith, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Guz Khan, Loren Gray and Jolene Blalock round out the cast, creating what’s shaping up to be a vibrant mix of comedy and musical chaos.
Produced by Wilson’s Camp Sugar banner with Matt Williams of Future Artists Entertainment and executive produced by Live Nation Studios, Girl Group is being choreographed by Chris Scott, best known for his work on Wicked.
Coolidge’s casting comes off the back of her award-winning turn in HBO’s The White Lotus, which earned her two Emmys and a Golden Globe. Scherzinger, meanwhile, recently swept Broadway with her critically acclaimed performance in Sunset Blvd., winning a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical.
With Wilson at the helm and a cast full of powerhouse performers, Girl Group looks set to blend chaos, comedy and chart-worthy energy into one of next year’s most talked-about films.
