Ken Aymong, a longtime producer and behind-the-scenes force at NBC’s Saturday Night Live, has returned to the show in a surprising move after retiring in 2021. Aymong, who first joined SNL in the mid-1980s, is now serving as a supervising producer for the iconic sketch comedy show’s 51st season, according to a person familiar with the matter.

His unexpected return was quietly revealed during the credits of the season’s second episode, where his name appeared alongside the rest of the production team. While the specific reasons behind Aymong’s comeback remain unclear, he was previously brought back to assist during SNL’s 50th anniversary season, which included major events such as a concert at Radio City Music Hall.

Though Aymong hasn’t been known for his involvement in sketch writing or celebrity bookings, he has played a critical role in keeping the show running smoothly on a business level. In the oral history Live From New York by Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller, Aymong noted, “I always look at the financial perspective of the show. I want it to go on forever.”

NBC has declined to comment on the development, but Aymong’s return aligns with a broader shift in responsibilities among executive producer Lorne Michaels’ trusted circle. Erin Doyle, a longtime producer, was promoted this season to a senior leadership role, while veteran Erik Kenward has stepped in as one of the current head writers. Michaels, who turned 80 last year, has not indicated plans to step away but has reportedly begun sharing more day-to-day duties with senior staff.

Aymong is part of a trusted group of SNL veterans that includes Steve Higgins, Mike Shoemaker, and previously, Marci Klein and Lindsay Shookus. While his role may not carry the glamour of on-air talent, his oversight of production budgets, special effects, and set design remains vital as SNL continues to balance the demands of live television and a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
