HBO has officially released the first trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the latest entry in the Game of Thrones universe. The highly anticipated prequel, based on George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, will premiere in January on HBO and HBO Max.
The trailer debuted at New York Comic Con, giving fans a first look at the new Westeros story set a century before the events of Game of Thrones and seventy years after House of the Dragon. Starring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, the series follows an unlikely pair of heroes navigating knighthood, loyalty, and survival during a turbulent age when dragons were still part of living memory.
The teaser reveals jousting tournaments, muddy battlefields, and flashes of the familiar Targaryen silver, while promising a more grounded tone than its predecessors. Showrunner Ira Parker described the series as a “gritty, hard-nosed medieval story” that focuses on the lives of ordinary people rather than lords and queens. He emphasised that this version of Westeros will feel closer to historical Britain, stripped of grandeur and centred on physical hardship and personal honour.
George R. R. Martin, who serves as executive producer and writer, confirmed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be shorter and tonally lighter than earlier shows, though danger remains ever-present. He noted that the prequel keeps the franchise’s trademark unpredictability, reminding fans that “in Westeros, no one is truly safe.”
The cast includes Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, a Dornish puppeteer.
With its trailer now live, buzz around the series has reignited excitement for the Game of Thrones franchise. Fans praised the fresh tone, comparing it to the early, character-driven years of the original show. HBO’s decision to premiere the prequel early next year positions it as one of 2025’s most anticipated television events, blending familiar world-building with a new perspective on knighthood, loyalty, and power in Westeros.
