The Rawalpindi District Election Commission will begin the delimitation process for eight local bodies in the district on Friday, ahead of the expected local government elections in December.
The district election commissioner has issued a letter to Deputy Commissioner Hassan Waqar Cheema, seeking maps and population details of the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation, District Council, and the municipal committees of Gujar Khan, Kallar Syedan, Kahuta, Taxila, and Potohar Town. According to the election commission, one union council will be formed for every 22,000 to 25,000 residents, which is likely to increase the total number of union councils in the district.
Currently, Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation has 46 union councils, District Council 102, Potohar Town 36, Gujar Khan Municipal Committee 27, Taxila 10, and Kallar Syedan and Kahuta municipal committees 12 each.
The re-demarcation process for all these bodies must be completed by November 30.
According to the spokesperson of the District Election Commission, teams have already been formed for the purpose, and each union council will be based on a population of 20,000 to 25,000 people. The number of UCs in Pindi is likely to increase, as one council will be formed for every 22,000 to 25,000 residents.
