At New York Comic Con 2025, DC Comics’ publisher and chief creative officer Jim Lee delivered a powerful keynote at Retailer Day, making it clear that the publisher will not support AI-generated writing or artwork.

Speaking to a crowd of retailers and fans, Lee emphasized that comics are defined by human emotion, imagination, and imperfection, qualities AI cannot replicate.

“AI doesn’t dream. It doesn’t feel. It aggregates,” Lee said. “The imperfect line, the creative risk, the hand-drawn gesture, that’s what makes comics come alive. That’s human effort. That’s why we create.”

He stressed that while AI can mimic, it cannot inspire or forge the emotional connections that readers experience through genuine human storytelling.

Lee’s comments come as the comics industry faces growing debate over artificial intelligence and its potential role in art and writing.

He framed DC’s stance as a commitment to authenticity, creativity, and the traditions that have shaped the publisher’s 90-year history.

Highlighting the importance of human creativity, Lee also praised comic book retailers, calling them “the beating heart of this industry.”

He described physical shops as essential hubs for fan engagement, community, and discovery, elements no algorithm can replace.

Looking to the future, Lee expressed optimism about the next decade of DC Comics. He said that while challenges such as AI, digital platforms, and public domain characters will continue to arise, human-driven storytelling will remain central to the company’s mission.

With DC’s 100th anniversary approaching in 2035, Lee reaffirmed that the publisher will continue to prioritize creativity, passion, and emotional connection over technological shortcuts.
