Andrew Garfield is finally setting the record straight about his viral 2025 Golden Globes moment, and it turns out it was a lot less intentional than fans thought.

The Under the Banner of Heaven star became an internet sensation in January after putting on his glasses mid-presentation at the awards show, instantly sparking swoons and memes online.

But in a new interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz on Tuesday, Oct. 7, Garfield clarified that the move had nothing to do with confidence, and everything to do with poor eyesight.

“You’re surrounded by your peers and other people you admire and have admired since you were a child,” Garfield said, explaining that his heart was racing with “unbridled terror” while presenting alongside Kerry Washington.

Then came the moment everyone remembers. “Oh f---. I can’t actually see the teleprompter. Did I bring my glasses? Yes, they’re in my right hand. Okay, great, now I can see,” Garfield recalled, laughing as he rewatched the clip.

The actor went on to describe the chaotic thoughts that followed: “Oh s---, this shirt is too open. I do not want to give people this much of my flesh.”

He tried to button it back up, only for it to fall open wider.

“I’m like, ‘Okay, just breathe.’ I breathe, and that makes me do a facial thing. I don’t know.”

Despite feeling panicked, Garfield powered through the presentation, unaware that social media was exploding over what viewers dubbed his “sexy glasses moment.”

“And then everyone thinks I’m trying to be sexy,” he said. “But in truth, neurosis is, I guess, kinda sexy ultimately.”

Garfield ended the interview with his trademark humor, adding, “My astigmatism is f------ me up right now. Okay, I can kind of see, but now I see too much chest.”

The now-iconic clip came from Garfield and Washington’s presentation of the award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

Garfield wore a dark green Gucci suit with a few buttons undone, just enough, it seems, to make the internet lose its collective mind.
