Dermatologist raises vitiligo alert
A renowned skin specialist has raised awareness about vitiligo, a chronic condition causing white skin patches that could be effectively managed with early diagnosis and treatment.
Leading Dermatologist and Cosmetic Surgeon Dr Khurram Mushir, during a conversation with a local news channel on the eve of World Vitiligo Day, emphasised that despite its visible effects, vitiligo is neither contagious nor life-threatening.
However, the condition could deeply affect an individual's emotional and psychological well-being, he added. He stated that vitiligo is curable in its early stages with proper treatment, but society also needs to be more accepting and supportive of those living with the condition.
While there is no complete cure once advanced, effective management strategies can help individuals lead fulfilling and confident lives, he added.
Treatment for vitiligo depends on how much the condition affects your quality of life, as vitiligo is not harmful to your body and is only cosmetic, he added.
Dr Mushir also warned that consuming sour and spicy foods should be avoided as they may aggravate the condition. While there is no complete cure once advanced, effective management strategies can help individuals lead fulfilling and confident lives.
The day aims to promote understanding, support those living with vitiligo and encourage research for better treatments and a possible cure, he added.
While the precise cause of vitiligo remains unknown, evidence points to genetics as a possible factor, he said, adding, researchers are exploring various elements, such as genetic predisposition and environmental triggers to better understand what initiates and drives the progression of vitiligo.
The skin specialist explained that in Pakistan, many myths surround vitiligo, including false beliefs about its causes and treatment.
