A man allegedly shot and killed his brother and nephew for "helping" police catch him on Thursday, a few days after killing the brother's other son in the Pirwadhai area. Two policemen also suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Both the victims had pinpointed the presence of the suspect at a place during a police raid yesterday.
The suspect, Sher Afzal, had allegedly murdered his own nephew a few days earlier following a minor verbal altercation. In response to this latest incident, the Punjab police chief had taken serious notice and requested a detailed report from the Rawalpindi Regional Police Officer (RPO). According to police sources, Sher Afzal had brutally killed his real nephew, Ali Ihtesham, four days ago in the Safdarabad area of Pirwadhai. A First Information Report (FIR) had been registered at the time on the complaint of the victim's brother, Ali Wahid.
On the day of the raid, the victim's father, Muhammad Sarwar, and brother, Ali Wahid, informed police that Sher Afzal was hiding in a multi-storey building and could be apprehended if prompt action was taken. Acting swiftly, a police raiding team proceeded to the location. However, as soon as the suspect spotted the approaching officers, he opened fire from an upper floor.
Tragically, Sarwar and his son Ali were killed in the gunfire. Two police personnel — Inspector Mirza Arif and Constable Niamatullah — were injured and subsequently transferred to Holy Family Hospital for medical treatment. The suspect managed to escape the scene following the shooting.
In the aftermath, Pirwadhai police launched a search operation in the surrounding areas. Authorities confirmed that Sher Afzal is responsible for the murder of his real brother and two nephews within the span of just four days. The same operation also left one senior officer and a constable wounded.
Inspector General of Punjab Police, Dr Usman Anwar, directed the RPO Rawalpindi to submit an urgent and comprehensive report. He also instructed the Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) to ensure the immediate arrest of the suspect and all those involved in the incident.
A police spokesperson confirmed that senior officers and investigation teams remained present at the scene. Forensic experts collected evidence, and multiple teams had been formed to locate and arrest the suspect without delay.
