The Witcher season 4 has become Netflix’s most expensive chapter of the fantasy drama, with a reported budget of $221 million.

According to Redanian Intelligence, the penultimate season cost more than $27 million per episode, surpassing the estimated $20 million per episode spent on Wednesday season 2 and exceeding Squid Game season 3’s reported total of around $71.4 million. Only Stranger Things season 4, at $270 million, ranks higher in terms of overall spend.

The cost marks a new peak for the series. Season 1 was produced for $92.1 million, while season 2 reached $176.3 million, and season 3 totalled $175 million. Including Blood Origin and The Rats: A Witcher Tale, Netflix has already invested more than $720 million in the franchise. Factoring in additional season 4 costs and two anime spinoffs, estimates suggest the overall budget could approach $900 million.

The new season sees Liam Hemsworth take over the role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill. Season 4 and the confirmed season 5 were filmed back-to-back, adapting Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake by Andrzej Sapkowski.

Despite Cavill’s departure, production costs have continued to rise, largely attributed to extensive visual effects and large-scale sets. Some fans expressed reluctance to watch without Cavill, with one commenting, “I’m not even going to watch it because Henry isn’t in it.”

Another added, “Likewise. One of the most stupid things to happen to that franchise.” Others noted their support for Hemsworth, with a fan writing, “I feel bad for the Hemsworth that got the role. I’m sure he’ll give it his all but he ain’t Cavill.”

The Witcher season 4 will be released on Netflix on October 30 2025.
