Ryan Reynolds has admitted that he once cursed at wife Blake Lively rather than miss a rare phone call from Bill Murray.
The Deadpool actor shared the story during a September 25 event in New Jersey promoting his upcoming documentary John Candy: I Like Me.
Reynolds, 48, said he had spent weeks trying to reach Murray to appear in the film, leaving nearly 40 voicemails. He eventually got the actor’s number through “a friend of a friend of a friend” and left a message asking to speak with him about the project, which explores the life and career of late comedian John Candy.
The Canadian star recalled that the long-awaited call finally came as he and Lively were about to enter a formal gala. Reynolds said he excitedly whispered “Bill Murray!” after seeing the name flash on his phone, while Lively urged him to head inside. In response, he admitted replying with profanity, a remark that drew laughter when recounted to the audience.
Reynolds added that he continued to pursue Murray, leaving dozens more messages until he tried a different approach — a video request featuring his young son. That plea, he said, convinced Murray to respond almost immediately and agree to participate in the documentary.
Reynolds and Lively, married since 2012, are parents to four children and are often known for their playful public banter. Alongside his documentary work, Reynolds has been supporting Lively as she navigates her ongoing legal battle with It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni.
John Candy: I Like Me will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 10.
