Avril Lavigne marked her 40th birthday early by performing with Billy Idol in Los Angeles. The Canadian singer made a surprise appearance on September 25 during Idol’s concert at the Kia Forum, joining him on stage for their collaboration 77.
The track is featured on Idol’s latest album Dream Into It and has become a focal point of his tour. Video shared by the venue on Instagram showed the pair performing together, with Idol in a black leather vest and chains, and Lavigne dressed in a black shearling maxi coat, oversized T-shirt, tights and boots.
Speaking to People, Lavigne described Idol as a “true legend” and reflected on the experience of working with him. She also revealed that she has another collaboration due next month with Bon Jovi on their forthcoming record, Forever (Legendary Edition), set for release on October 24.
Backstage, Idol surprised Lavigne with a birthday cake in honour of the occasion. The event also saw her meet Joan Jett for the first time, with Joan Jett & The Blackhearts currently serving as the opening act for Idol’s North American tour.
Lavigne has previously performed Jett’s 1980 track “Bad Reputation,” covering it on The Best Damn Tour before recording it as a bonus track for her 2011 album Goodbye Lullaby.
This performance came shortly after Lavigne announced her first official wine, Complicated, which she created in collaboration with Banshee Wines.
The limited-edition pinot noir was named after her 2002 debut single and launched following a two-year collaboration that began during her Greatest Hits Tour.
