Borderlands 4 was initially set to mark the beginning of the Nintendo Switch 2's big fall season, but the game has now been delayed indefinitely. Gearbox Entertainment cited the need to ensure the "best possible experience" for fans on the new handheld console as the reason for the last-minute decision. This move comes just days before the game was scheduled to launch on October 3, leaving many surprised.
In an announcement on Tuesday evening, Gearbox explained: “We regret to inform you that the release of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 is being delayed. This decision has not been made lightly, but we are committed to delivering the best experience for our players. The game requires additional development time to meet those standards.”
The studio added that it plans to set the new release date for Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 in conjunction with the arrival of cross-save support across all platforms, but no specific timeframe was provided. The announcement concluded with a promise to update fans once the release plans were fully adjusted. In the meantime, digital pre-orders on the Nintendo eShop have been canceled and refunds will begin on September 26, in line with Nintendo's policy.
This delay follows ongoing concerns about Borderlands 4’s performance on multiple platforms. Players have reported issues with the game’s performance on PC, including a memory leak that worsens the longer you play without restarting. On Switch 2, the game runs at a capped 30fps, and while early impressions suggested it performed decently, reviews from Steam Deck players have been less favorable. Additionally, Digital Foundry’s analysis of the game across different platforms raised concerns about its overall performance.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has been active on social media since the release of the sci-fi shooter, but as of now, he has not commented on the delay.
