Energy-saving codes enforced

Move aims to promote energy efficiency in federal capital

ISLAMABAD:

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has issued a notification to ensure the implementation of the Energy Conservation Building Codes (ECBC), making adherence to NEECA building codes mandatory for all constructions and buildings.

This was announced during a meeting at CDA Headquarters, chaired by CDA Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa.

The meeting reviewed the enforcement of building codes in Islamabad with a view to promoting energy conservation and efficiency. It also considered matters related to the establishment of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in public and commercial buildings and designated areas.

It was emphasised that the Energy Conservation Building Codes 2023 and PEC by-laws are being enforced, with due regard to the financial aspects of construction to ensure energy savings. The meeting was informed that NEECA is organising a series of training programmes in collaboration with relevant institutions to support the effective implementation of these codes.

Furthermore, NEECA has developed software and tools, including a Building Performance Database Tool, an ECBC Compliance Tool, and a Residential Load Factor Tool, to facilitate proper enforcement of the codes.

The meeting also engaged in detailed discussions on the Prime Minister's vision for EV charging stations. It was noted that steps are being taken to establish charging stations at all petrol pumps across Islamabad, alongside initiatives to install stations in public and commercial buildings and designated areas.

The Managing Director of NEECA informed the meeting that registered charging stations will be supplied with electricity at subsidised rates. It was also agreed that CDA's electric feeder buses will be registered with NEECA.
