Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has voiced unease over the current state of free speech in the United States, remarks that drew attention during the San Sebastian International Film Festival on Sunday. Speaking at a press conference for her new film Couture, Jolie said she felt the country she loves has become unrecognizable due to growing restrictions on expression.
“I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country,” Jolie said, according to WION. She emphasized that any effort to divide or limit personal freedoms is “very dangerous” and warned that society is facing “heavy times.”
Her comments come during renewed debate over free speech in the U.S. following the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! after host Jimmy Kimmel made controversial remarks regarding conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s killing. The decision by ABC, owned by Disney, has sparked significant backlash, with stars including Mark Ruffalo, Pedro Pascal, Olivia Rodrigo, and Tatiana Maslany criticizing the move. Ruffalo accused the government of suppressing free speech, while Pascal urged audiences to defend democracy.
Although Jolie did not mention the Kimmel controversy directly, her remarks were widely interpreted as a subtle response to the climate surrounding the suspension. The actress, who has previously collaborated with Disney on major projects like Maleficent and Marvel’s Eternals, appeared to distance her comments from any single incident while highlighting broader cultural concerns.
At the festival, Jolie premiered Couture, in which she portrays Maxine Walker, a filmmaker navigating personal and professional challenges during Paris Fashion Week. The role, she noted, connected with her own experiences, including past health struggles.
Jolie has also suggested she may eventually move abroad once her youngest children reach adulthood, hinting at growing disillusionment with life in the U.S.
