CD Projekt appears to be revisiting multiplayer features for Cyberpunk 2, years after similar plans for Cyberpunk 2077 were abandoned. A recent job posting for a lead network engineer on Cyberpunk 2 highlights responsibilities such as developing and optimizing multiplayer systems, including matchmaking, while addressing challenges like latency, bandwidth, and server performance.

The role also involves close collaboration with game designers and programmers to seamlessly integrate online features, playing a key part in designing the network architecture and online systems. This position is based primarily at CD Projekt’s Boston studio, where Cyberpunk 2 is currently in development, while the company’s Polish teams focus on The Witcher 4.

Although CD Projekt has not officially confirmed multiplayer gameplay for Cyberpunk 2, the studio previously explored multiplayer options for the original Cyberpunk 2077. The developer has expressed intentions to eventually add online play across its franchises, and multiplayer for the sequel has been hinted at before.

Multiplayer development for Cyberpunk 2077 was ongoing for years and was intended as post-launch DLC. However, following the game’s problematic launch, the studio shifted focus to fixing the core game, ultimately shelving multiplayer plans.

Senior quest designer Philipp Weber explained in 2022 that priorities shifted to delivering a solid single-player experience before pursuing other features.

Adding to the excitement, Cyberpunk 2077 star Keanu Reeves recently told IGN he’d love to reprise his role as Johnny Silverhand in the sequel.
