President Donald Trump has reignited debate over media regulation after suggesting that TV networks critical of him should have their broadcast licenses reviewed, following ABC’s suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Kimmel’s late-night show was recently put on indefinite hiatus after his remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death drew heavy criticism.

While ABC said little publicly, the fallout prompted attention from Washington, including comments from Trump.

The president claimed that “licensed networks are not allowed to run negative coverage” against him, suggesting broadcasters risk losing their ability to operate if they do so.

However, legal experts and FCC officials note that the Commission regulates local television affiliates, not national networks like ABC, NBC, or CBS.

FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez recently clarified that the agency “does not have the constitutional authority to revoke a license based on content or viewpoints.”

Still, Trump’s comments have fueled speculation about heightened political pressure on media organizations, particularly as ABC’s parent company Disney faces scrutiny from regulators and affiliates.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr has also weighed in, calling ABC’s handling of the controversy a matter of public concern.

The dispute highlights how Kimmel’s suspension has moved beyond late-night entertainment and into broader debates about politics, regulation, and freedom of the press.
