Jimmy Kimmel’s career at ABC was already in question before his recent suspension over remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to an exclusive report from Page Six.
The late-night host, whose multi-million-dollar deal with Disney was set to expire in the coming months, was preparing for contract negotiations.
However, insiders indicated that ABC executives were considering ending his run after this season, even before the controversy surrounding his comments.
Disney chief Bob Iger was reportedly cautious about the network becoming further entangled in political disputes with former President Donald Trump, following efforts to stabilize Disney’s public image.
Following the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the 57-year-old comedian was seen in Century City visiting attorney Karl Austen, whose clients have included Seth MacFarlane, Jude Law, and Dave Bautista.
Despite speculation, Kimmel remains close with Disney Entertainment co-chair Dana Walden, who reportedly informed him of the suspension. Industry sources noted that Walden is unlikely to completely sever ties with the longtime host.
The controversy centers on Kimmel’s remarks during a monologue about the death of Charlie Kirk, where he accused the “MAGA gang” of using the tragedy for political purposes. Reports indicated that Kimmel has not issued an apology for the remarks.
The fallout extended beyond ABC. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr criticized Disney over the incident, and Sinclair Broadcasting, the largest ABC affiliate group, reportedly set conditions regarding the program’s future.
Kirk, a conservative commentator and ally of Donald Trump, was killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University.
The investigation into his death, and the debate over Kimmel’s commentary, have left the future of Jimmy Kimmel Live! uncertain.
