The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of intermittent rainfall across most districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, cautioning that heavy showers could trigger glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the province's glacial regions.
In an advisory issued on Monday, PDMA alerted residents of Upper and Lower Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Upper Kohistan to remain vigilant against possible glacier-related incidents. District administrations have been directed to monitor sensitive locations closely, ensure timely warnings, and conduct evacuation drills where necessary.
The authority has instructed the public to avoid unnecessary movement near streams and nullahs and refrain from driving vehicles into strong water currents. Emergency evacuation sites have been prepared in potentially vulnerable areas, while rescue services and relief supplies remain on high alert.
Tourists visiting northern districts have also been urged to adopt precautionary measures and stay informed about the weather situation. Meanwhile, the National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organization (FWO), and Communication and Works Department (C\&W) have been put on alert to ensure the timely restoration of road networks in case of disruptions.
PDMA further stated that an awareness campaign has been launched to inform the public about safety precautions and preventive measures. Its Emergency Operations Center is fully operational, and citizens have been advised to report any untoward incidents by calling the helpline at 1700.
PDMA has issued a high alert in view of the Pakistan Meteorological Department's forecast of intermittent rains, thunderstorms, and windstorms from September 15 to 19 across several districts of the province.
